SENIOR DATA ARCHITECT / LEAD DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (DBA)
Location: Cape Town Remote / Hybrid | Experience Level: Senior (5 years+)
Job Overview
We are seeking a visionary Senior Data Architect / Lead DBA to design, scale, and secure our next-generation data ecosystem. In this role, you will be the strategic blueprint architect behind our multi-cloud data infrastructure, ensuring it is robust, highly secure, and optimized for an AI-driven future.
Your immediate mission will be to architect a multi-tenant framework across AWS and Azure (with potential expansion into Google Cloud Platform). You will implement a production-grade Medallion Architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold) and establish enterprise-grade data management frameworks. If you are passionate about building future-proof infrastructure that seamlessly bridges traditional ETL pipelines with cutting-edge AI and Machine Learning applications, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
· Multi-Cloud Architecture: Architect, deploy, and govern high-performance data environments spanning both AWS and Azure (with Google Cloud exploration).
· Medallion Data Design: Build and optimize end-to-end Medallion Architectures, structuring pipelines across Bronze (raw), Silver (cleansed/enriched), and Gold (business-ready) layers.
· Multi-Tenancy Governance: Design and implement scalable, isolated, multi-tenant database architectures that guarantee strict data segregation across diverse environments.
· Modern ETL/ELT Production: Design high-throughput, low-latency ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and orchestrate large-scale data streams.
· Enterprise Data Security: Enforce strict data security policies, including column/row-level security, encryption at rest/in transit, dynamic masking, and compliance frameworks.
· AI & Future-Readiness: Evaluate, design, and adapt our data structures to optimally feed LLMs, vector databases, and advanced AI frameworks, positioning our data asset as an AI accelerator.
· Hybrid DBA Leadership: Act as the ultimate escalation point for multi-cloud database performance tuning, indexing strategies, backup recovery, and cross-cloud replication.
Required Skills & Qualifications
· Cloud Expertise: Deep, hands-on architectural experience with AWS data services (e.g., Redshift, Athena, Glue, EMR) and Azure data services (e.g., Synapse, Fabric, Databricks, Azure SQL).
· Architectural Mastery: Proven track record of designing Medallion Architectures and managing lakehouses using formats like Delta Lake, Iceberg, or Hudi.
· Multi-Tenant Experience: Demonstrated success building SaaS-level multi-tenancy frameworks with strict data isolation and resource governance models.
· Data Management & Governance: Mastery of master data management (MDM), data lineage, metadata cataloguing, and data quality frameworks.
· Security & Compliance: Expert-level knowledge of data security, IAM, networking (VPCs, VNets, Private Links), and global compliance regulations (e.g., GDPR, SOC2, HIPAA).
· AI/ML Data Vision: A solid understanding of—or verifiable passion for—how AI interacts with data storage, vector embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures.
Nice-to-Have Skills
· Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data tools (BigQuery, Dataflow).
· Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform to deploy multi-cloud infrastructure.
· Relevant cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Engineer, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Databricks Solution Architect).
