Job description

Senior L2 Application Support Lead Engineer

Location: Hybrid in South Africa, or remote for candidates based within approximately three hours of South African time

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior L2 Application Support Lead Engineer to lead a Level 2 application support function responsible for business-critical enterprise applications.

The successful candidate will oversee complex incident resolution, maintain application stability, manage support processes and work closely with development, DevOps, infrastructure, security and business teams.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior support professional who combines strong technical troubleshooting skills with team leadership, stakeholder management and a continuous-improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

Lead and mentor the Level 2 Application Support team
Manage escalated incidents and ensure timely resolution in line with SLAs
Perform root cause analysis and coordinate permanent fixes with L3 and development teams
Monitor application performance, logs and system health
Manage ticket queues, priorities and stakeholder communication
Support application releases, deployments and change windows
Coordinate with platform, security, infrastructure, QA and DevOps teams
Maintain runbooks, standard operating procedures and knowledge articles
Produce reports covering application performance, incident trends and resolution metrics
Ensure compliance with ITIL processes and internal security standards

Required Skills and Experience

At least 4 years of Application Support experience
At least 2 years in a senior, lead or mentoring position
Strong experience supporting Java applications in production
Knowledge of Java runtime architecture, Java APIs and Spring Boot
Experience supporting APIs, API Gateways, integrations and application interfaces
Understanding of API logging, tracing and error-handling patterns
Hands-on experience with Splunk, AppDynamics or New Relic
Experience supporting applications on Linux and Windows
Exposure to AWS and/or Azure
Experience with MSSQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle

Nice-to-Have Skills

MongoDB
Kubernetes
CI/CD pipelines
Python, Java, C# or .NET scripting
DevOps and automation experience
FinTech or banking experience
Experience working across multiple countries, cultures or African markets

Qualifications and Certifications

ITIL Foundation or ITIL Managing Professional
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate
AWS SysOps Administrator – Associate
Splunk or AppDynamics certification
Red Hat Certified System Administrator
Certified Kubernetes Administrator
Java certification
Azure or AWS DevOps certification
