Job description
An opportunity exists for a Senior Laboratory Analyst / Supervisor to join the team at our Bemlab agricultural and water testing laboratory in Strand, Cape Town. We are seeking an individual with a proven track record of displaying technical competence in soil/leaf science and who has a high level of ethics and integrity while consistently aligning with the PathCare values.
The successful candidate will be required to supervise the leaf & fertilizer department. Responsibilities will include overseeing the daily operations of the section, supervise laboratory staff, and maintaining high-quality work. The role requires a combination of scientific expertise, supervisory skills, and the ability to foster a collaborative and efficient work environment.
Key Competency Requirements and Experience
· B.Sc./Hon Agric, Soil Science degree or another related field
· Minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory setting,
· Must have been in a supervisory position
· Experience with laboratory accreditation processes (ISO17025)
· Intermediate computer literacy (Microsoft Office; MS Word, Excel)

- Ability to work under pressure and display
· Resilience and tenacity in challenging situations
· Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
· Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) precisely
· Must be fluent in English with an understanding of Afrikaans
· Overtime and weekend work may also be required as per work schedule and requirements and therefore the individual will require his/her own reliable transport.
· Must have an acceptable track record/performance record with regard to the technical and behavioural competencies required to perform in this position
Key Responsibilities
· Supervise and manage work-flow.
· Evaluate and verify test results.
· Supervise, train and mentor staff.
· Participate in Proficiency Testing scheme(s) and evaluate outcome of results.
· Perform instrument and method troubleshooting.
· Equipment maintenance and upkeep, including monitoring of consumables required for effective running of department.
· Provide feedback and updates to department manager relating to department function and any issues experienced.
· Assist with the implementation, improvement and development of methods and procedures.
· Maintain set turnaround times (TAT) for the department.
· Investigate any issues related to laboratory testing and reporting.
· Ensure accurate documentation and reporting of laboratory results.
· Become a Technical signatory for methods
· Ensure Health and Safety requirements within the department are adhered to.
