CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
To facilitate and administer the learning process for students of Plant Physiology in the Department of Botany, Nelson Mandela University at undergraduate and post graduate level, to do research, contribute to community engagement and to be involved in the core functions of the University.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Facilitate teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at high levels of relevance and quality.
Develop and update learning and teaching materials continuously to maintain modules as contemporary and current.
Evaluate student performance in accordance with acceptable benchmarks and report the same to University Administration using appropriate student assessments.
Contribute to the generation of new knowledge through involvement in an independent research programme, delivering peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals.
Supervise the research projects of undergraduate and post-graduate students.
Be involved in community engagement programmes and partnerships with industry and civil society.
Take responsibility for aspects of the core administrative functions of the Department, Cluster and University.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Possess sound knowledge in the theory and application in the Botanical discipline(s) of Plant Physiology and Cell Biology.
Effective facilitation of learning in these discipline(s) in Botany at undergraduate and postgraduate level using modern teaching aids.
Competence, or willingness to develop competence, in the use of institutional learning management systems and online teaching platforms to support teaching and learning.
Contribute to the creation of knowledge by virtue of publications and the successful supervising of Doctoral and/or Masters candidates.
Display good interpersonal skills, a passion for students and the ability to work well in a team.
Have potential for leadership in Departmental and Faculty learning and teaching as well as research.
Knowledge of, and experience in, plant biotechnology would be an advantage.
REQUIREMENTS
A PhD in Botany in the discipline of Plant Physiology.
A minimum of one to five years of experience of teaching Plant Physiology to Botany students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
A track record of research experience is required as evidenced through peer reviewed publications that have appeared in internationally recognised journals and/or successful sourcing of independent research funding.
Successful or current supervision of Masters and/or Doctoral students is required.
Experience in administration of academic modules and activities will be an advantage.

Applicants will be required to present a 15 minute lecture on an appropriate topic to a departmental panel.
