FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES- GEO AND SPATIAL SCIENCES
POSITION NUMBER: P003809
VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER IN ROCK MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
PEROMNES GRADE: A7
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To lecture undergraduate modules and supervise postgraduate students in the Sustainable Mining Programme, carry out research and produce publications.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A PhD in Geological sciences/Engineering Geology/Mining Engineering (NQF level 10).
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as tutoring undergraduate students.
- At least one publication in a reputable journal and/or strong research background.
- Prior experience in postgraduate supervision.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
- A certificate in rock mechanics (NQF level 3).
- A certificate in strata control (NQF level 3).
- Accreditations with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
- Professional registrations with the South African Council of Natural Scientific Professionals (SACNASP).
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching
- Teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level in Geology.
Research
- Undertake research within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management on issues of Geology, Soil Sciences and Engineering Geology and/or Rock Mechanics.
- Supervision of post-graduate students.
- Produce research output through international and national accredited articles and conference contributions.
- Fundraising for research.
Admin
- Administrative tasks including curriculum development.
Community engagement
- Application of expertise in communities to address local identified issues of Geology/Soil Sciences.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Experience in sustainable mining practices and/or mine rehabilitation.
- Good knowledge on legislation governing the mining environment.
- Good knowledge of South African geology and the South African mining industry.
- Field work experience.
- Prior experience in lecturing at tertiary level.
- Laboratory experience.
- Industry experience.
- Good publication record in reputable journals.
- Prior experience in postgraduate supervision.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
