FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES – SCHOOL OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES

POSITION NUMBER: V000191

VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER

PEROMNES GRADE: A7

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

A Senior Lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a department, school, faculty or other organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to contribute to scholarship, research and/or professional activities, and to share relevant skills and expertise in support of community engagement initiatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD in Risk Management, Finance, or a related field (NQF Level 10).
  • A minimum of three (3) years' experience in teaching, learning, and research within Risk Management, Banking, Finance, and/or Investment Management.

ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • Membership of professional bodies such as GARP, PRMIA, CFA Society South Africa, SAIFM, or similar professional organisations.
  • Practical or professional exposure to banking, asset management, financial markets, risk management, or financial regulation.
  • Professional accreditation with FRM, PRM, CFA, SAIFM/RPE, or an equivalent professional credential, or progress towards obtaining such credentials.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Technical Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
  • Proficiency in R and Python for data analysis, statistical modelling, forecasting and research applications.
  • Ability to integrate R and Python into module content, practical learning activities and assessments.
  • Knowledge of quantitative research methods, statistical analysis and data visualisation techniques.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and present data using appropriate software and analytical tools.
  • Knowledge of banking risk management, prudential regulation and the South African financial-sector regulatory environment, including the SARB and Prudential Authority where relevant to assigned modules.
  • Knowledge of Basel II/III/final Basel III reforms, capital adequacy, credit risk, market risk, operational risk, liquidity risk and/or investment management.
  • Ability to apply quantitative methods to practical banking, financial-risk and investment-management contexts, including risk measurement, portfolio analysis, regulatory/capital-related applications and data-driven decision-making.
  • Proven track record in post-graduate supervision, demonstrated by the successful supervision of at least one Master's student through to completion, with the degree formally awarded.
  • A proven research track record, evidenced by the publication of at least two peer-reviewed articles in accredited journals within the relevant discipline.
  • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
  • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Practical or professional exposure to banking, asset management, financial markets, risk management or regulation.
  • Professional qualifications, progress toward professional qualifications or memberships such as FRM, PRM, CFA, SAIFM, GARP, PRMIA, CFA Society South Africa or similar.
  • Experience with advanced Excel, VBA, financial modelling, Bloomberg, Refinitiv, DataStream, EViews, Stata, SQL, Power BI or similar tools would be advantageous.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
  • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a team member within a diverse academic environment, contributing positively to collective goals, working collaboratively with colleagues from different cultural, disciplinary and professional backgrounds, and implementing agreed-upon decisions, policies and instructions in a professional and constructive manner.
  • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
