Requirements:
Senior Lecturer
Academic Route
- A Doctor of Laws (LLD) or PhD in Law in a relevant field (preferably Mercantile Law or Private Law).
- At least: five (5) years’ teaching experience in a higher education institution, or seven (7) years’ relevant professional experience.
- A minimum of three (3) publications in accredited journals and/or book chapters/books.
- Evidence of research, teaching, and postgraduate supervision in Mercantile Law and/or Private Law.
Professional Route
- A Master of Laws (LLM) degree in a relevant field of law (no other Master’s degrees will be considered).
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate:
- Proof of admission required.
- Proof of pupillage or practical legal training required (for advocates).
- Letter of good standing from the relevant professional body required.
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ post-admission experience as an Attorney or Advocate.
- Demonstrated legal practice, teaching, research, or advisory experience in Mercantile Law and/or Private Law.
- Applicants must have a clear professional focus aligned with legal practice.
Note:
Appointments through the professional route are on a five-year contract, with the possibility of conversion to a permanent position upon obtaining a doctoral qualification during the contract period.
Lecturer
Academic Route
- A Master of Laws (LLM) degree in a relevant field of law.
- Two (2) years’ teaching experience in a higher education institution, or Five (5) years’ relevant professional experience.
- Submission of a teaching or professional portfolio.
- Evidence of positive student evaluations.
- Strong communication and teaching skills.
Professional Route
- A Master of Laws (LLM) degree in a relevant field of law.
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate:
- Proof of admission required.
- Proof of pupillage or practical legal training required (for advocates).
- Letter of good standing required.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ post-admission experience.
- Good communication skills.
Candidate with post-graduate experience will have an added advantage

- Teach undergraduate modules such as:
- Consumer Law
- Company Law / Corporate Law
- Law of Contract
- Property Law
- Family Law
- Law of Persons
- Law of Succession and Deceased Estates
- International Trade Law
- Banking Law
- Tax Law
- Law of Delict
- Information Technology and Cyber Law
- Teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Conduct research and publish in Mercantile Law and/or Private Law.
- Provide academic leadership within the Department.
- Participate in:
- Curriculum development
- Programme coordination
- Community engagement initiatives
- Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with academic institutions and the legal profession.
Critical Competencies
- Strong grounding in Mercantile Law and Private Law.
- Ability to integrate legal theory with professional practice.
- Excellent teaching, communication, and supervision skills.
- Capacity to contribute to practice-oriented legal education.
