Senior Specialist Geotechnical – Africa (Underground)

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

Provides specialist geotechnical engineering support and services for underground operations and projects across the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) African Business Unit. This role acts as a tactical advisor on rock mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, managing geotechnical risk and embedding within site teams through routine deployments to optimize local technical capability.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Geotechnical Design & Systems: Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews. Enforce Group data systems for collection, management (GeotAgg), and validation (PowerBi).

Operational Assurance: Support technical compliance audits and reviews. Assist sites in creating actionable roadmaps to resolve data collection or structural model deviations.

Site Deployment & Secondment: Act in seconded site roles for extended periods to directly drive workforce development, technical capability transfer, and operational compliance.

Risk & Business Planning: Deliver functional data inputs to short- and medium-term plans to ensure ground control efficacy and regional asset optimization.

Training & Coaching: Provide functional training to site personnel on data management systems, GMRi, and GRiP implementation.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

Education & Qualification

Bachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (post-graduate qualification is highly desirable).

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

At least 8 years modern mechanised operational (onsite) mining experience (ie jumbo development/ longhole open stoping, QAQC, risk management and data collection)

Has written/ developed Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) and Trigger Action Response Procedures (TARP)

Has developed and verified ground support designs for underground development

Exposure to paste backfill and Life of Mine (LOM) sequencing is desirable

Has coached / developed junior engineers

Willingness to travel extensively
