Job description
Senior Editorial Journalist
Company: Road Genius
Location: Remote — South Africa
Engagement: Full-time contractor
About the role
Road Genius is looking for an experienced journalist and editor to work across our growing portfolio of Australian websites.
You will cover topical areas in the travel space, property, housing and construction, and finance. You will also support new data-led publications as they are developed.
Our AI draft automations produce detailed, source-linked first drafts. Your role is to turn those drafts into accurate, readable and publication-ready articles by applying the editorial judgement that automation cannot provide.
This is not a conventional SEO writing or proofreading role. You need to be able to identify the real story in the data, improve the structure and storytelling, question weak claims and preserve the intended meaning without introducing opinion or exaggeration.
What you’ll do
- Substantially edit and rewrite AI-generated statistics articles.
- Identify the strongest findings and ensure the article leads with the right information.
- Rework headings so they are SEO friendly - clear, specific, searchable and aligned with reader intent.
- Improve introductions, structure, narrative flow and overall readability.
- Verify statistics, calculations, dates, definitions, methodology and supporting sources.
- Check that chart, table and article figures agree.
- Add context and explain what the data means without overstating what it proves.
- Write missing sections or occasional articles where a heavier rewrite is required.
- Maintain a clear, neutral and credible editorial style in Australian English.
- Help improve our editorial guidelines and AI drafting processes by identifying recurring issues.
What we’re looking for
- At least 5 years of professional journalism experience, including substantial writing and editing responsibilities.
- A strong background in newspapers, magazines, digital news or another established editorial publication.
- Excellent rewriting, subediting and fact-checking skills.
- Confidence working with statistics, government releases, industry reports and research.
- The ability to make data-heavy writing interesting without making it opinionated or sensational.
- Strong attention to detail and the confidence to question data, sources and unsupported conclusions.
- Comfort working with AI-assisted editorial workflows.
Experience in travel, business, finance, property, economics or data journalism would be highly regarded.
Applicants without professional journalism experience will not be considered.
Work arrangement
This is a full-time remote contractor role requiring some weekday overlap with Australian business hours.

Please submit:
- your CV;
- a brief summary of your journalism and editing experience; and
- two or three relevant published writing or editing examples.
