Job description

Job Title: Server Engineer | Group IT | IT Infrastructure Job Summary This is a senior role within the Infrastructure Operations team. The incumbent will be responsible for the design, administration, support, and continuous improvement of the organisation's infrastructure platforms, with a strong focus on Windows and Linux environments, enterprise storage solutions, and core infrastructure services. The role will play a key part in advancing automation, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) capabilities to improve operational efficiency, consistency, and scalability. The successful candidate must possess advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across hardware, operating systems, storage, and infrastructure platforms, and will be responsible for the execution, enhancement, and documentation of operational and maintenance procedures.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise server, virtualization, and infrastructure environments to ensure high availability and optimal performance.
  • Manage and support Windows-based server platforms, including installation, configuration, patching, monitoring, and ongoing operational support.
  • Design, implement, support, and troubleshoot Linux and open-source infrastructure platforms, ensuring stability, security, and operational excellence across hybrid environments.
  • Administer, maintain, and optimize enterprise storage platforms, ensuring data availability, performance, resilience, capacity planning, and adherence to business continuity requirements.
  • Develop and maintain automation, scripting, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions to support DevOps practices, streamline operational processes, improve consistency, and reduce manual intervention across the infrastructure estate.
  • Administer and optimize virtualized infrastructure environments, ensuring scalability, resilience, and efficient resource utilization.
  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise identity and access management solutions, including Active Directory forests, domains, authentication, and security services.
  • Design, implement, and support enterprise messaging and collaboration environments, ensuring reliability, security, and business continuity.
  • Deliver cloud transformation initiatives, including cloud migrations, deployments, and hybrid infrastructure integration.
  • Provide advanced technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex infrastructure incidents and operational challenges.
  • Participate in after-hours support and escalation processes to maintain critical business services and infrastructure availability.
  • Ensure compliance with established change management, governance, and project delivery methodologies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to continuously improve infrastructure services, operational processes, and platform performance.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance technical documentation, standards, procedures, and knowledge repositories for infrastructure operations.
  • Identify opportunities for infrastructure modernization, automation, and process improvement to improve service delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Support the planning, implementation, and maintenance of secure, resilient, and scalable IT infrastructure solutions aligned with business requirements.

Experience And Qualifications

  • Microsoft certification (MCSE, MCITP, or equivalent modern Microsoft infrastructure/cloud certification).
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent virtualization certification.
  • Cloud platform and infrastructure certification (Azure, AWS, or equivalent).
  • Degree or Diploma in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills, with experience in technologies such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar.
  • Comprehensive experience administering and supporting Microsoft Windows Server environments in an enterprise setting.
  • Experience supporting enterprise server infrastructure, including Dell, HPE, Cisco, and other industry-standard platforms.
  • Proven experience working in a high-pressure operational support environment with stringent availability and service-level requirements.
  • Strong understanding of operating system hardening, security best practices, patch management, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Experience with enterprise storage technologies, particularly NetApp SAN environments, would be advantageous.
  • Experience administering Linux-based operating systems (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Solaris, or similar) would be advantageous.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools and methodologies would be advantageous.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills across infrastructure, operating systems, storage, and cloud environments.
