SHERQ Officer and Maintenance Technician

The ideal candidate for this role will be responsible for implementing, facilitating, guiding, and auditing compliance within Occupational Health & Safety, Maintenance, Security, Environmental, and Quality guidelines.

The incumbent will ensure that all HomeChoice Distribution Centre operations comply with current legislation, HomeChoice minimum SHERQ standards, and company policies to minimize risk.

Policies

• Familiarize yourself with all relevant company policies and procedures.
• Inspect and audit compliance with company policies and SHERQ requirements.

Health & Safety

• Identify hazards and risks.
• Implement appropriate risk controls.
• Train relevant appointees to ensure competency.
• Guide employees in maintaining standards.
• Implement standards and procedures.
• Conduct inspections and risk assessments.
• Audit and evaluate the effectiveness of H&S systems.
• Arrange monthly SHE meetings.
• Ensure budget allocation for H&S initiatives.
• Implement and maintain the MANGO SHERQ Online Management System.
• Drive continuous improvement and corrective action initiatives.
• Reduce IODs and DIFRs with a target of zero injuries.
• Ensure compliance with Department of Labour requirements.
• Achieve annual ISO certification.

Maintenance

• Identify maintenance hazards and risks
• Implement maintenance risk controls
• Train maintenance personnel in safe work practices
• Ensure compliance with OHS regulations and local by-laws
• Ensure compliance with SANS standards relating to building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, fire and security systems
• Manage subcontractors and landlords
• Conduct audits and implement corrective actions

Environmental

• Identify environmental aspects and impacts
• Ensure compliance with NEMA and ISO 14001:2015
• Manage waste contractors
• Identify waste streams and implement recycling strategies
• Drive initiatives to achieve zero waste to landfill
• Implement electricity and water-saving initiatives
• Conduct audits and corrective actions
• Achieve annual ISO certification

Quality

• Identify environmental aspects and impacts
• Ensure compliance with NEMA and ISO 14001:2015
• Manage waste contractors
• Implement recycling strategies to achieve zero waste to landfill
• Achieve annual ISO certification

Risk & Security

• Identify security hazards and risks
• Manage CCTV and alarm systems
• Implement security controls
• Manage security contractors
• Ensure compliance with PSIRA and SAIDSA regulations
• Implement procedures to prevent pilferage, theft and robbery
• Manage security budgets
• Assist with security investigations, fraud investigations and cash management
• Oversee stock and inventory audits

Business Continuity

• Implement BCM procedures and plans
• Train employees on BCM plans and actions
• Ensure compliance with ISO 22301
• Maintain emergency contact information
• Conduct internal compliance audits

Quarterly and Annual Assessments

• Conduct monthly and quarterly audits and assessments
• Ensure DC audits are completed at least twice per year
• Assist with compliance audits at third-party vendors

Meetings

• Conduct monthly Health & Safety/MANGO meetings
• Arrange monthly security meetings
• Facilitate management review meetings
• Compile audit feedback reports
• Take meeting minutes
• Produce monthly MANGO reports

Ad Hoc Tasks

• Assist the Facilities team with administrative and operational requirements
• Support the DC, Wynberg and Showrooms when required
• Assist with special projects

HR & IR Management

• Assist with HR and IT investigations and hearings
• Compile disciplinary hearing investigation packs
• Prosecute and/or chair disciplinary hearings

Finance

• Manage maintenance and SHERQ budgets
• Arrange ad hoc maintenance and repair work
• Manage the SHERQ training budget

What You'll Need To Do This Role

• Matric
• Relevant Diploma
• Relevant Degree (advantageous)
• Valid EB/Code 8 driver's licence
• 2 to 5 years' experience in a safety administration role and/or as an SHE Representative
• Certification and practical experience as a First Aider, Fire Fighter and Health & Safety Representative
• 2 to 3 years' experience in a Health & Safety role
• Experience identifying hazards, risks and implementing controls
• 2 to 4 years' facilities management experience
• Technical knowledge of electrical, plumbing, fire and security systems
• Experience managing maintenance contractors, security providers, cleaning contractors and labour brokers
• Qualification in ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015
• Experience using the MANGO SHERQ Management System
• Experience developing and managing SHERQ budgets
• Project management experience
• 5+ years' knowledge of CCTV and alarm systems
• Knowledge of cash and fraud investigations
• Ability to travel and spend extended periods away from home
• Ability to work remotely when required
