About the role and teamOur Engineering team is growing! We are looking for a practical, curious Software Engineer who loves diving into systems, following data where it leads, and solving real-world operational problems.

As part of the Payments Team, you’ll initially help build the “Mission Control” that powers our global money movement. You will bridge the gap between complex payment systems and practical operational tools, combining backend logic (in Java/Python/Postgres) with fast-iteration user-interface solutions like Retool.

This is the ideal role for an engineer driven by curiosity and problem-solving: someone who naturally wants to trace an issue through databases, system logs, and traces to find the root cause, and then follow through by building the fix or internal tool that prevents it from happening again.

This role has an immediate impact on Day 1 while getting the context, mentorship, and opportunity to grow into core backend engineering at your own pace.

What You’ll Do* Trace & Debug Systems: Dive into databases, application logs, and system traces to untangle complex transaction lifecycles, identify bottlenecks, and resolve payment anomalies.

• Build the "Control Center": Use pragmatic tools (like Retool and other solutions) to build internal applications and dashboards that give operations teams real-time control over global workflows.
• Contribute to Backend Engineering: As you build context on our domain, write, maintain, and scale backend APIs and service logic (Java/Python/Postgres).
• Architect Data Flow: Ensure data moves securely and accurately from core services to internal interfaces, maintaining high standards for data integrity.
• Leverage Modern Dev: Utilize agentic AI tools and low-code platforms to accelerate delivery, automate manual workflows, and build smarter systems.

What You Bring to the Table* Pragmatic Problem-Solving: You value shipping solutions that work. You embrace low-code platforms like Retool to solve problems quickly, but aren't afraid to step down into code when a custom fix is required.

• Investigative Mindset: A strong instinct to follow data through a complete stack—using SQL queries, logging, and tracing to understand exactly how systems behave under the hood.
• Backend Curiosity: An interest in (or experience with) backend development in Java or Python and Postgres, with a genuine desire to grow deeper into core backend development over time.
• End-to-End Follow-Through: You don't stop at identifying a bug or bottleneck; you take pride in seeing a solution all the way through to operational impact.
• Collaborative Communication: You enjoy working closely with Product Managers and Ops teams to turn ambiguous operational challenges into clean technical solutions.

Bonus Points* Data Experience: You’ve worked in environments where data integrity is mission-critical.

• Observability Tools: Experience with log aggregators (Grafana, Loki, Prometheus, Datadog, Splunk, ELK) or distributed tracing platforms.
• Internal Tooling: Familiarity building developer/operations interfaces.
