Sommelier/ Wine Specialist | La Residence

The Sommelier or Wine Specialist at La Residence works closely with the Restaurant Management team, our Group Beverage Manager and the hotel Duty Managers, to ensure that all aspects of the guest experience, wine service and stock management at the hotel is of the very highest standards possible. They ensure that the wine experience contributes positively to the company's purpose, which is "to give our guests a complete experience and a perfect stay" .

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Being on the floor during service in order to make wine recommendations to guests and discuss or introduce the various wines on our list
• Hosting wine tastings either on property or by special arrangement on a tour with guests
• Providing input on the wine list to the Group Beverage Manager
• Stock control and ensuring that bottles are suitably stored in the barn and cellar
• Related admin – invoicing, sales, storage etc.
• Train Wine Stewards at La Residence and any other properties, as and when required
• Responsible for promoting and maximising beverage sales and minimising waste
• Follows and ensures that both The Royal Portfolio and Leading Hotels of the World service standards are being adhere to
• Staying abreast of the latest trends in both the culinary, wine and spirits worlds
• Cultivating relationships with distributors and vintners
• Curating a unique and interesting experience for quests

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

• A tertiary qualification in hospitality would be a distinct advantage, although not essential
• International Wine course WSET level 2/3, Junior Sommelier or Sommelier qualification and exceptional wine knowledge
• Must have at least 5 years’ experience in a hotel/ restaurant environment
• Excellent sales skills or ability to upskill
• The ability to take the initiative and be a leader
• Developmental approach to staff
• Organised with strong admin skills
• Ability to multitask and excellent time-management
• Proven job reliability, diligence, dedication and excellent personal presentation
• Must be a team player, flexible and willing to work shifts
• Valid SA drivers’ license

It is important that the candidate is able to work as part of a team and is a good cultural fit for The Royal Portfolio.

South African citizenship is advantageous. A valid work permit is essential if you are not in possession of a South African ID document.
