International SOS is seeking experienced Registered Nurses to join our Johannesburg-based medical team. This is an excellent opportunity to move beyond the demands of traditional clinical environments and apply your expertise within a fast-paced, international medical assistance setting.
About The Role International SOS is the world’s leading provider of medical and security solutions, delivering international medical assistance to organisations across industries such as Oil & Gas, Mining, Infrastructure, Aviation, and Maritime.
In this role, you will provide compassionate, high-quality medical assistance to a global client base, supporting patients and stakeholders across diverse and often complex environments.
Key Responsibilities for the role
- Deliver front-line telephonic triage for patients
- Interpret medical situations through tailored risk analysis (clinical condition vs. geographical location)
- Provide telephonic medical advice to patients, families, employers, and stakeholders
- Monitor and manage cases through to closure, ensuring appropriate clinical outcomes and financial compliance
- Liaise with international medical professionals regarding patients hospitalised or treated overseas
- Provide pre-travel and evacuation medical assistance, including:
- Coordination of medical evacuation and repatriation services
- Bedside medical assessments prior to travel
- Provision of health and travel advice
- Accompany patients on international commercial flights as a medical escort where required
Qualification And Experience Requirements
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, including experience as a Primary Healthcare Practitioner or in Emergency, Trauma, or ICU settings
- Current and valid ACLS, PALS, ITLS certifications
- Prior experience in Medical Assistance, Travel Medicine, Cruise Ship, Aviation, or Maritime environments, and telephonic medical advice (advantageous)
- Experience as a Unit Manager or equivalent role
- Valid passport (EU/UK or additional passport advantageous)
- Ability to work in a shift-based environment (essential)
Required Skills And Competencies
- International travel experience
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Additional language skills (French or Portuguese) advantageous
- Strong customer service and telephone communication skills
- Proficiency in information and communication technology (computer literacy)
- Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and able to take ownership and demonstrate accountability
