Job Title: Senior Java Developer (Payments)
Company: AIT Global
Employment Type: Contract – 12 months, client-site placement
Work Location: Hybrid, Western Cape
Start Date: As soon as possible

Job Purpose
AIT Global is seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to be placed at our client, a leading South African financial services institution. The role requires a hands-on developer with a strong Java background and specific experience in payment systems, payment devices, terminals or fintech. You will design, develop and maintain the software solutions that support the client's payment-processing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and maintain scalable, high-performance Java applications.
Implement and maintain payment-processing systems, ensuring security and compliance with industry standards (e.g. PCI DSS, EMV, ISO 8583/ISO 20022 where applicable).
Develop and integrate RESTful APIs and microservices supporting the payments infrastructure.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, architecture, QA, operations) to define, design and ship new features.
Participate in code reviews to maintain code quality and improve system architecture.
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues with minimal downtime and customer impact.
Contribute to continuous improvement of development processes, tooling and CI/CD.
Keep up to date with emerging technologies and payments industry trends.

Required Skills & Experience

Minimum 7 years of professional Java development experience.
Strong proficiency in Spring Boot and related Spring frameworks.
Solid understanding of object-oriented design principles and design patterns.
Experience building RESTful APIs and microservices, and deploying to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP).
Experience in payment systems, card/terminal integration or financial transaction processing.
Strong knowledge of database systems (SQL and NoSQL).
Familiarity with Git and CI/CD pipelines.
Ability to work independently at a client site and communicate clearly with technical and business stakeholders.

Advantageous

Banking or financial services industry experience.
Containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
Messaging/streaming platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
Front-end exposure (Angular or React).
Certifications in Java, Spring or a cloud platform (AWS, Azure).

Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field (or equivalent experience).

Experience Level: Senior (7+ years)
