Job description
Location: Remote – South Africa (work from anywhere in SA)
Employment type: Full-time, permanent – employed locally in South Africa via a registered Employer of Record (EOR), paid in ZAR with full SA statutory compliance
Salary: R45,000 – R60,000 per month (CTC), depending on experience
About the Opportunity
I am recruiting on behalf of a growing structural engineering consultancy based in Dublin, Ireland, which is expanding its design team into South Africa. The firm works predominantly in the residential sector, with regular commercial and industrial projects. The successful candidate will take structural projects from initial concept through to construction, working fully remotely for the Irish office.
The working day runs on Irish business hours – just one hour behind South African time for most of the year, so no night shifts and no awkward time zones.
This is a genuine career role, not contract work: you will be formally employed in South Africa through an Employer of Record, with a compliant local contract, and fully mentored toward international chartership (IStructE / Engineers Ireland).
Key Responsibilities
- Structural design: Deliver calculations for structural members in concrete, steel, timber, and masonry to Eurocode.
- Modelling and drawing production: Produce high-quality drawings, details, and specifications in AutoCAD and Revit.
- Compliance: Ensure designs meet Irish/UK statutory requirements (full training and support provided).
- Collaboration: Coordinate design information with architects and MEP engineers.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: BEng/BSc (Hons) or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering (NQF Level 8 or equivalent).
- Experience: 2–3 years in a structural design consultancy.
- Frame analysis: Able to analyse basic frames by hand and produce bending moment diagrams, shear force diagrams, and reactions. This will be assessed at interview.
- Design codes: Working knowledge of Eurocodes and/or SANS design codes. Direct Eurocode experience is a strong advantage; structured training to Eurocode and Irish/British Building Regulations will be provided.
- CAD software: Proficient in AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit.
- Analysis software: Hands-on experience with 3D frame analysis software – Tekla Structural Designer or Oasys GSA preferred; strong Prokon or similar users willing to cross-train will be considered.
- Communication: Clear written and spoken English for technical reports and client coordination.
- Remote setup: Reliable fibre internet and a suitable home working environment (backup power for load shedding an advantage).
What's on Offer
- Competitive ZAR salary at the top end of the South African market, paid locally and fully tax-compliant.
- Full mentorship and financial support toward international chartership (IStructE / Engineers Ireland) – internationally recognised professional status without leaving South Africa.
- Paid professional membership subscriptions.
- Continuous internal and external technical training, including structured Eurocode training.
- 100% remote working with stable, long-term employment on international-quality projects.
How to Apply
Submit your CV with a short cover note describing your design experience (codes used, software, project types). The client's name will be disclosed to shortlisted candidates, who will complete a technical interview including hand analysis of a basic frame. All applications are treated in confidence.
