Structural Engineer

GWIC is looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Stellenbosch office and strengthen our in-house design capabilities in South Africa.

The successful candidate will be a Civil Engineer specialised in structural engineering , with strong practical experience in the design and development of structural projects for buildings , from concept and detailed design through multidisciplinary coordination, technical documentation and approval processes.

We are looking for a hands-on engineer capable of taking responsibility for structural design and working closely with architects and other engineering disciplines to deliver fully coordinated and compliant projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete, structural steel and masonry structures ;
• Design of foundations, slabs, beams, columns, retaining structures and other structural elements ;
• Development of structural projects from concept design through detailed design and construction documentation ;
• Preparation and review of structural calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports ;
• Coordination and design integration with Architecture, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and other specialist disciplines ;
• Identification and resolution of clashes and technical interfaces between disciplines;
• Coordination with CAD/BIM technicians and designers , ensuring that drawings accurately reflect the engineering design;
• Preparation and coordination of the technical documentation required for project submissions and approvals with the relevant authorities ;
• Liaison with clients, architects, consultants, contractors and approving authorities;
• Technical review of drawings and documentation prior to issue;
• Site inspections and technical support during construction;
• Ensuring compliance with applicable South African standards, SANS codes, National Building Regulations and project requirements .

Candidate Profile

• BEng / BSc in Civil Engineering , preferably with a focus on Structural Engineering;
• Ideally 5–10+ years of relevant structural design experience , particularly in building projects;
• ECSA registration as PrEng will be highly valued; ECSA describes Pr Eng registration as enabling independent professional engineering practice.
• Strong experience in reinforced concrete and structural steel design ;
• Experience in residential, commercial, institutional and mixed-use developments will be particularly valued;
• Strong knowledge of South African structural design standards and approval requirements ;
• Proficiency in structural design and analysis software such as Prokon or equivalent ;
• Good working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit/BIM environments ;
• Demonstrated experience coordinating structural design with architectural and MEP disciplines ;
• Ability to take ownership of structural projects and work independently from design through approval and construction stages;
