Job description

Main Purpose: To plan and execute projects and provide supervision to artisans and assistants whilst ensuring that the stipulated budget is adhered to. Quality, cost and schedule control are critical functions of this role.

Key Performance Areas include:

Planning

  • Look at the scope for a project and break down all the elements required to complete the project.
  • Gather all the necessary resources prior to project start and ensure all necessary QMS documentation and safety files are in place.

Supervision

  • Schedule activities and allocate personnel to the jobs that must be executed.
  • Monitor progress on the projects and provide feedback to management.
  • Conduct daily risk assessments and job observations.
  • Ensure that safety and quality standards are adhered to.
  • Communicate critical information to team.
  • Ensure conflict is dealt with and maintain discipline of team.
  • Daily Site meetings.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks.
  • Any other job-related duties as required from time to time.

Project Margins

  • Ensure all projects are executed according to the budget and that the quoted margins are achieved.
  • Support the tendering office by providing the complete breakdown of all resources that will be required to execute a given scope, inclusive of durations of every resource.

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive and complete projects to improve business performance.

Other

  • Required to accept phone calls outside of working hours.
  • Required to travel to sites and live away from home as required by projects.
  • May be required to work extensive hours when emergencies arise.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Grade 12/N3.
  • Qualified Artisan (Fitter or Fitter and Turner 5) or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A qualified International Welding Specialist (IWS) would be advantageous.
  • 6 Years’ experience with supervision in a workshop environment.
  • Experience with utility valves.
  • Familiar with SANS 347 and PER.
  • Experience in Project planning and execution.
  • Knowledge of planning and executing basic mechanical maintenance of valves – stripping, lapping, blue, assemble and test in accordance with standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with welding procedures and machining/manufacturing activities would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of group leadership and on-the-job training.
  • Basic understanding of construction methods and plant maintenance requirements.
  • Able to read technical drawings and draft sketches.
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to, all Internal policies, procedures, guidelines and management systems is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of compiling high-level activity plans and recommendations for valve refurbishment (Work Instructions).
  • Knowledge of cost-control (Man-hours, equipment and consumables, spares), controlling daily job cards and resource allocation.
  • Intimate knowledge of health and safety requirements, risk assessments, Quality Control documents, Plant Safety, site access and permit systems.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office suite of software and MS Projects).
