Role Purpose Lead the technical design and delivery of Java-based services in the Multiply ecosystem, ensuring solutions are secure, resilient, operable, and aligned to business outcomes. The role translates business requirements into implementable designs across mobile-facing APIs, gateways, core and in-country services, and integration/event flows. Accountable for technical quality, architecture conformance, cross-team dependency management, and production readiness (including observability, rollback, and support handover), while mentoring engineers without direct line-management responsibility.

Requirements Qualification:

  • Grade 12
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science/software engineering/ information technology and or equivalent
  • Honors degree in IT (advantage)
  • Oracle Certified Professional (Java).
  • Cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Agile/Scrum certifications

Experience:

  • 7 years+ experience in software development with a strong focus on Java development.
  • Proven experience designing, developing, deploying, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.
  • Experience working across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Experience in technical leadership, leading solution design, code reviews, and development initiatives without direct people management responsibilities.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Experience in working in Multiply backend services (advantage)

Knowledge:

  • Strong proficiency in Java (Java SE/EE) and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Experience with frameworks such as Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Hibernate/JPA.
  • Solid understanding of RESTful API design and microservices architecture.
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Experience using source control systems such as Git

Duties & Responsibilities PROCESS

  • Lead the technical design and development of Java-based applications and services.
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions and system designs.
  • Collaborate with the Scrum Master/Project Manager to deliver quality, effective software, in line with the agreed development process and business needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, conduct analysis and prioritise requests.
  • Conduct research and evaluate potential technical solutions to identified business problems.
  • Partner with Business and/or System Analysts to translate business requirements into workable solutions and document solutions into technical specifications.
  • Design and code new software functionality using code that is readable, maintainable and re-usable.
  • Conduct Unit Testing of own code, and System Integration Testing (SIT) of each solution and resolve all issues/queries timeously.
  • Collaborate with the testing team to co-create test cases to ensure that features within each application are working as expected.
  • Contribute to user acceptance testing (UAT) and training material to ensure that functionality is working correctly.
  • Deliver coding into the applicable production environment once testing has been completed.
  • Provide stakeholders with regular feedback on the technical design and timelines for solution ensuring that business needs are met.
  • Maintain existing programmes according to change requests approved by business as and when needed.
  • Diagnose root causes of system issues through problem-solving and recommend potential solutions.
  • Monitor performance of solutions and make recommendations to improve the performance and functionality of the solution.
  • Log issues found in existing systems as internal change controls and ensure successful resolution of issues.

CLIENT

  • Provide authoritative expertise and advice to clients and stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain collaborative, professional relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Deliver on service level agreements made with clients and stakeholders in order to ensure that expectations are managed.
  • Participate and contribute to a culture which builds rewarding relationships, facilitates feedback and provides exceptional client service.
  • Oversee code quality through reviews, standards, and best practices.
  • Support all phases of the SDLC, including development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Ensure solutions meet performance, security, scalability, and reliability standards.
  • Mentor and guide developers on technical matters without formal line management responsibility.
  • Collaborate with architects, business analysts, product owners, and operations teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes and engineering practice

  • Collaborate in strategic planning sessions to align IT department goals with overall company objectives, facilitating a clear roadmap for implementation.
  • Develop and implement innovative technology solutions to improve operational efficiency and address business needs, resulting in streamlined processes and enhanced productivity.
  • Establish and enforce rules, policies, and procedures for a secure and productive IT environment, ensuring compliance and safeguarding company assets.
  • Foster a culture of innovation by encouraging team members to propose and implement new ideas, driving technological advancements and promoting organisational growth.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices in IT operations, data security, and privacy, maintaining a robust and secure IT infrastructure.

  • Contribute to the financial planning process within area
  • Identify opportunities to enhance cost effectiveness and increase operational efficiency
  • Manage financial and other company resources under your control with due respect
  • Provide input into the risk identification processes and communicate recommendations in the appropriate forum
  • Continuously assess and identify opportunities for process improvements within the IT team, aiming to streamline workflows, enhance productivity, and reduce costs, optimising resource utilisation and driving cost savings.
  • Effectively manage IT resources under your control, optimising expenditure, and ensuring cost-effective utilisation of technology solutions and services, maximising return on investment.
