Job description
AVSTAGE Event Technical is growing, and as we expand our event technical offering and client base, we’re looking to strengthen our team with an experienced Technical Manager.
We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of that growth — someone who can bring strong technical expertise, leadership and commercial thinking to the business, while helping us build and develop a strong technical team for the future.
If you’re a hands-on technical all-rounder who enjoys live events, leading people, solving problems and making things happen, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
You’ll lead the technical planning and delivery of live events across AV, lighting, staging, rigging and power, from reviewing briefs and quotes to equipment, crew and onsite management. We’re looking for an experienced AV all-rounder with strong leadership, planning and problem-solving skills, commercial awareness, industry connections and the ability to confidently manage clients, suppliers and technical teams while driving high standards and practical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall technical responsibility for events from quotation through to delivery and de-rig.
- Lead technical planning across audio, video, lighting, staging, rigging and power, including equipment, crew, logistics and production documentation.
- Review briefs, venue requirements and floorplans, identify technical challenges and develop practical solutions.
- Lead technical teams onsite, including setup, rehearsals, live shows and breakdowns, ensuring AVSTAGE’s quality and safety standards are met.
- Work closely with Sales and Operations on accurate, commercially viable quoting, budgets, margins, supplier negotiations and cost control.
- Manage and develop the technical team, including training, mentoring and building a strong freelance technician network.
- Act as the technical lead with clients, venues, suppliers and production teams, managing changes and resolving issues professionally.
- Produce and interpret basic technical drawings, floorplans and schematics.
- Build and maintain strong supplier, freelancer and industry relationships.
- Improve technical systems, processes, standards and documentation, including Current RMS.
- Take ownership of technical delivery, ensuring projects are well planned, professionally executed and commercially successful.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is:
- A confident technical all-rounder with strong live events experience.
- Comfortable working across audio, video, lighting, staging, rigging and power.
- A natural leader who has experience and enjoys developing and growing people.
- Commercially astute and understands margins, cost control and profitability.
- Strong at negotiating with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Well connected within the events and technical production industry.
- Someone with an established network of reliable suppliers, freelancers and technical specialists.
- A strong problem solver who remains calm under pressure.
- Highly organised with excellent planning and project management skills.
- Confident dealing directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
- A strong communicator who can work effectively with Sales, Operations, clients, venues and suppliers.
- Proactive, energetic and a genuine "make it happen" person.
- Comfortable being hands-on when required.
- Able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Passionate about events and delivering a high standard of technical production.
- Someone who takes ownership rather than waiting to be told what needs to be done.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in the live events, audiovisual or technical production industry.
- Strong technical knowledge across multiple AV disciplines.
- Previous experience managing technical teams.
- Experience with event technical planning and onsite delivery.
- Experience with technical quoting and equipment specifications.
- Strong knowledge of Current RMS or similar rental/event management software is essential.
- Strong commercial understanding, including budgets, margins and cost control.
- Proven supplier and subcontractor negotiation skills.
- Strong industry relationships and an existing technical supplier/freelance network.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills.
- Strong client-facing and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and travel when required.
- Valid driver's licence.
What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will take ownership of the AVSTAGE technical department and become the person the team, Sales, Operations and clients can rely on.
They will ensure that projects are technically sound before they reach site, the correct equipment and people are allocated, quotes are accurate and commercially viable, suppliers are effectively managed, and events are delivered safely, professionally and profitably.
They will also play a key role in growing the technical department by developing the team, building the freelance network, improving systems and processes, strengthening industry relationships and continuously improving AVSTAGE's technical offering.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who doesn't wait to be told what needs to be done — they see what needs to happen, take ownership and make it happen.
