Technician
East London

Job Purpose
A leading supplier of heavy equipment and machinery is seeking a qualified and experienced Technician to join its East London branch. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out servicing, maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on a range of heavy equipment and machinery, ensuring maximum equipment reliability and customer satisfaction.
The role requires a hands-on technician with strong fault-finding skills, the ability to work independently both in the workshop and in the field, and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship while adhering to manufacturer standards and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repairs

  • Carry out scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults.
  • Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and identify repair requirements.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed to manufacturer specifications.
  • Test equipment after repairs to verify performance and reliability.

Field Service Support

  • Attend customer sites to diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns.
  • Perform emergency breakdown repairs efficiently to minimise customer downtime.
  • Commission new equipment and conduct pre-delivery inspections where required.
  • Provide customers with technical advice regarding equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Complete service reports and job documentation accurately.

Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Use diagnostic software and specialised tools to identify faults.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Recommend corrective actions and preventative maintenance solutions.
  • Escalate complex technical issues where necessary.

Workshop Operations

  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
  • Ensure workshop tools and equipment are correctly maintained.
  • Follow company service procedures and quality standards.
  • Assist with workshop housekeeping and inventory control.

Customer Service

  • Deliver professional and courteous service to customers.
  • Communicate repair requirements and recommendations clearly.
  • Build positive customer relationships through quality workmanship and reliable service.
  • Represent the company professionally during field service visits.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ensure safe working practices at all times.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Qualified Trade Test as a:
  • Diesel Mechanic
  • Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic
  • Heavy Equipment Mechanic
  • Auto Electrician
  • Or equivalent recognised trade qualification.
  • Valid Code 8 driver's licence (Code 10 or 14 advantageous).
  • Computer literacy (MS Office).
  • Ability to use electronic diagnostic equipment.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 3–5 years' post-trade experience working on heavy equipment or earthmoving machinery.
  • Experience servicing and repairing construction, mining, agricultural, or material handling equipment.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic experience.
  • Experience working both in a workshop and on customer sites.
  • Experience using manufacturer diagnostic software will be advantageous.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following industries:

Applicants with experience working on leading brands of heavy equipment, earthmoving machinery, or construction equipment, and who are comfortable performing both workshop and field service duties, will be highly regarded.
