Technician In Training

Purpose of the Role

The Technician in Training (TIT) programme is an entry-level development opportunity designed to build technically competent, hands-on engineering technicians who can independently diagnose, disassemble, repair and restore specialised plant equipment.

Successful candidates will develop specialist expertise in one of two technical streams:

• Mechanical Engineering – levellers, slitters, mandrels, uncoilers, coilers and hydraulic systems.
• Control & Instrumentation Engineering – specialised instrumentation, gauges and strip-centring equipment.

This is a practical, tools-based role where incumbents will work directly on equipment, analyse performance trends, identify faults and carry out repairs while developing into recognised technical specialists within Central Engineering.

The core responsibilities of the position include:

• Participate fully in the Technician in Training development programme and successfully complete all required assessments, projects and training interventions.
• Analyse equipment performance and trends to identify deteriorating conditions and emerging faults.
• Conduct hands-on fault-finding, strip-down, inspection, repair, replacement of components, testing and recommissioning of specialised plant equipment.
• Develop specialist expertise within either the Mechanical or Control & Instrumentation equipment stream.
• Support artisans and maintenance teams by providing technical troubleshooting and diagnostic assistance.
• Participate in planned and breakdown maintenance activities on assigned equipment.
• Apply Root Cause Analysis (RCA) methodologies to investigate recurring equipment failures and identify sustainable solutions.
• Document repair activities, troubleshooting findings and improvement recommendations.
• Contribute to equipment reliability, continuous improvement and preventative maintenance initiatives.
• Maintain accurate technical records and comply with the Quality Management System and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
• Continuously develop technical competence through structured mentoring, practical exposure and formal training.

The requirements of the position include:

• National Diploma, BTech or BEng Tech (NQF Level 7) in: Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• No prior work experience required beyond P1 and P2 practical training components.
• Practical exposure to mechanical or electrical equipment through vacation work, in-service training, workshop projects or similar activities will be advantageous.
• Exposure to specialised industrial equipment, hydraulic systems, instrumentation or rotating equipment will be advantageous.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience in fault finding, equipment repair, assembly or maintenance activities will be advantageous.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
• Ability to work methodically and systematically when diagnosing technical problems.
• Strong learning orientation with a passion for developing specialist technical expertise.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• A valid South African Driver's Licence (Code 08) will be advantageous.
• Willingness to work shifts, overtime and weekends when required by operational demands.
• Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment and perform hands-on equipment maintenance activities.
