Job description
Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance on trailers.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical faults on side tipper trailers.
- Inspect, repair and maintain trailer braking systems, including air-brake components.
- Inspect and repair suspension systems, axles, hubs, bearings and related components.
- Maintain and repair hydraulic systems used on side tipper trailers.
- Diagnose hydraulic leaks, pressure problems, damaged hoses, valves and cylinders.
- Inspect and repair trailer electrical systems, lights, wiring and connections.
- Conduct inspections on chassis, bodywork, coupling systems and fifth-wheel related components.
- Replace worn or damaged components and ensure correct installation.
- Perform welding, fabrication and structural repairs where required.
- Inspect tyres, rims and wheel assemblies and report defects.
- Identify potential mechanical problems before they result in breakdowns.
- Complete preventative maintenance according to workshop schedules.
- Attend to trailer breakdowns and carry out repairs when required.
- Ensure trailers are safe and compliant before being released back into operation.
- Maintain accurate service, repair and inspection records.
- Report parts and equipment requirements to the Workshop Manager.
- Ensure tools and workshop equipment are properly maintained.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Assist with emergency repairs and breakdown recovery when required.
- Work closely with mechanics, workshop staff, drivers and fleet management.
- Perform any other reasonable duties related to the position.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience working on heavy-duty trailers. (Afrit trailers)
- Experience with side tipper trailers will be highly advantageous.
- Strong knowledge of trailer braking and air systems.
- Experience with trailer suspension, axles, hubs and bearings.
- Experience with hydraulic systems and hydraulic fault-finding.
- Welding and fabrication experience advantageous.
- Experience working in a heavy-duty transport or logistics environment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical faults accurately.
- Valid driver's licence advantageous.
- Code 10/14 driver's licence advantageous.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
