Job description

We are looking for a Treasury Accounts Assistant to join our Cash and Banking team.

This is not an entry-level finance position. You do not need to be professionally qualified; however, you must have practical experience completing bank reconciliations from start to finish and be comfortable investigating discrepancies and understanding why accounts do not reconcile.

The successful candidate will be naturally curious, detail-focused and confident investigating issues rather than simply identifying that something is wrong.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post monthly bank reconciliations across multiple entities in line with monthly deadlines.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items promptly.
  • Identify and investigate unmatched transactions, posting errors, timing differences and data discrepancies.
  • Follow transactions from the bank statement through the relevant sub-ledger and into the general ledger.
  • Ensure bank accounts, reconciliation rules, mappings and supporting records are accurate and up to date.
  • Update and improve auto-reconciliation rules where required.
  • Investigate system or reconciliation issues and work towards identifying and correcting the root cause.
  • Escalate recurring issues or risks where appropriate.
  • Clearly explain reconciliation problems, what has been identified and what action is required.
  • Liaise professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist the Cash and Banking Manager with ad hoc tasks across the wider Cash and Banking team.

What We Are Looking For

You will need to be someone who:

  • Has 1–2 years' practical experience within a finance function.
  • Has hands-on experience completing bank reconciliations independently.
  • Understands the full bank reconciliation process rather than only capturing transactions.
  • Can investigate why transactions do not reconcile and work through the issue logically.
  • Is comfortable investigating system, posting and transaction discrepancies.
  • Can understand an issue and clearly communicate what is happening and what needs to be done.
  • Has strong attention to detail.
  • Has a practical, investigative and problem-solving mindset.
  • Can manage deadlines and work effectively during busy month-end periods.
  • Is confident using Excel and finance/accounting systems.

Qualifications

A formal finance qualification is not essential.

Practical finance experience and the ability to independently complete and investigate bank reconciliations are more important for this role.

Pay: R15 000,00 - R18 000,00 per month

Application Question(s):

  • Have you independently investigated and resolved differences identified during a bank reconciliation?
  • Please briefly explain the steps you would take if a bank reconciliation did not balance.

Short written answer.

  • Have you investigated issues such as unmatched transactions, incorrect postings, timing differences or transactions posted to the wrong account?
  • Have you worked with transactions flowing from a bank statement through a cashbook/sub-ledger and into the general ledger?
  • Please give a brief example of a bank reconciliation discrepancy you have investigated and how you resolved it.
  • How would you rate your Excel skills? Basic

Intermediate
Advanced

  • Which accounting or finance systems have you worked with?
  • Are you comfortable working with a salary range of R15,000–R18,000 per month, depending on experience?
  • Are you willing and able to work UK-aligned business hours, with your South African working hours adjusting when UK daylight saving time changes?

Experience:

  • practical experience within a finance function.: 2 years (Required)
