  • Use multi-brand computer diagnostic equipment to retrieve fault codes, conduct guided tests, interpret live data and confirm repairs.
  • Conduct post-repair inspections and road/functional tests, document results and release vehicles only when defects have been rectified or formally escalated.

Trailers and tyres

  • Inspect and repair trailer braking, air, electrical, suspension, landing-leg, coupling, body, tarp and hydraulic systems where applicable.
  • Maintain an accurate fleet tyre register, including serial numbers, fitment positions, condition, pressure, tread and replacement/rotation information.
  • Report irregular tyre wear, alignment concerns, wheel-end defects and recurring trailer failures.

Breakdown and driver support

  • Attend roadside and depot breakdowns, assess risk, make the area safe and complete repairs where practical.
  • Provide clear remote telephone support to drivers to assist with safe fault identification and escalation.
  • Participate in a rotational standby arrangement and provide after-hours support, including weekends and public holidays when required.
  • Escalate failures requiring recovery, specialist support, OEM intervention or extended downtime.

  • Use new, reconditioned and serviceable used parts responsibly and only where approved and fit for purpose.
  • Protect removed components for inspection, warranty or core return and report abnormal or repeat failures.
  • Check the quality and scope of work completed by external repairers and report deficiencies before acceptance where possible.
  • Minimise waste, avoid unnecessary replacement of serviceable components and protect company assets, tools and stock.

Administration and communication

  • Open, update and close electronic job cards with accurate fault descriptions, diagnosis, work performed, parts used and inventory, labour time and test results.
  • Maintain vehicle service history, inspection sheets, tyre records and supporting photographs or diagnostic reports when required.
  • Perform reasonable ad hoc duties related to workshop and fleet operations.

3. Minimum Requirements

  • Recognised Diesel Mechanic Trade Test Certificate or equivalent accredited qualification.
  • Minimum five years’ post-qualification experience repairing and maintaining heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

  • Competence in computer-based diagnostics and interpretation of fault codes, wiring diagrams, technical manuals and service information.
  • Valid South African driver’s license. Code EC/Code 14 with a valid Professional Driving Permit is strongly preferred for vehicle testing and recovery support.
  • Own reliable transport and ability to report for standby call-outs.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and participate in a 24/7 rotational standby service.
  • A responsible safety record, sober habits and the ability to work reliably with limited supervision.
  • Valid South African documents.
