To provide an effective and efficient service to clients by obtaining the correct medical and setting of underwriting requirements telephonically, that need to be referred to a Senior Underwriter for sign-off. We are seeking an experienced Renewal & Portfolio Underwriter to join our Underwriting team.

This role is responsible for proactively managing policy renewals, improving customer retention, protecting underwriting profitability, and optimising portfolio performance

Key Responsibilities :

Renewal Management

  • Proactively manage upcoming policy renewals.
  • Review renewal outcomes and identify retention opportunities.
  • Explain premium increases, policy amendments, cover changes, and underwriting decisions.
  • Engage customers before renewal to address concerns and reduce cancellations.
  • Support customers with suitable retention and risk management solutions.
  • Ensure renewal decisions align with underwriting guidelines and profitability objectives.

Portfolio Management

  • Monitor portfolio performance and profitability indicators.
  • Identify emerging risk trends and adverse claims patterns.
  • Analyse loss-making and deteriorating accounts.
  • Develop and implement corrective underwriting actions.
  • Support portfolio optimisation through risk-based decision making.
  • Assist in maintaining sustainable portfolio growth and profitability.

Multi-Claimant Review and Management

  • Conduct detailed assessments of customers with multiple claims.
  • Investigate claim frequency, severity trends, and overall risk quality.
  • Recommend underwriting interventions where appropriate.
  • Apply risk management strategies including excess amendments, rating adjustments, policy restructuring, endorsements, exclusions, and cover modifications.
  • Prevent unnecessary policy attrition through commercially viable underwriting solutions.

Customer Retention and Service

  • Deliver a professional and consultative customer experience.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to retain profitable customers.
  • Promote customer confidence through transparent communication.
  • Assist in resolving renewal-related queries and complaints.

Underwriting Governance

  • Ensure compliance with underwriting standards, product rules, and governance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records and renewal decisions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the renewal and portfolio management environment.
  • Contribute to portfolio reporting and management information.

You will be an ideal candidate if you have:

  • Relevant Insurance Qualification.
  • RE5 qualification advantageous.
  • FAIS compliant
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Short-Term Insurance Underwriting.
  • Experience within Personal Lines and/or Commercial Lines underwriting.
  • Proven experience managing renewals and retention initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio profitability and claims performance analysis.
  • Experience dealing with high-risk or multi-claimant customers advantageous.

Technical Knowledge

Strong understanding of:

  • Short-Term Insurance Underwriting.
  • Motor, Buildings, Contents and Portable Possessions insurance.
  • Underwriting principles and risk assessment.
  • Claims trends and loss ratio management.
  • Portfolio profitability management.
  • Renewal underwriting strategies.
  • Customer retention methodologies.
  • Insurance regulatory and compliance requirements.
