Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

To lead and manage the nursing unit by ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care through effective coordination of nursing services, staff leadership, compliance with professional standards, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Lead, supervise, and support the ICU nursing team to deliver safe, high-quality patient care within their scope of practice.
  • Plan, organise, coordinate, and manage the day-to-day operations of the unit to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with the Department of Health (DOH), South African Nursing Council (SANC), Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and other applicable legislation.
  • Coordinate and oversee individualised patient care from admission to discharge, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide clinical leadership, mentoring, teaching, and training to nursing staff and students.
  • Monitor staff competence, conduct performance reviews, and support staff development.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff in collaboration with the Nursing Services Manager (NSM).
  • Manage unit resources, including equipment, fixed assets, and inventory, ensuring appropriate maintenance and accountability.
  • Demonstrate sound financial and strategic planning to support effective unit management.
  • Foster positive working relationships with doctors, patients, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Effectively manage conflict and resolve operational challenges within the unit.
  • Prepare and submit accurate management reports within required timeframes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Approximately five (5) years’ experience as a Professional Nurse, deputising for the Unit Manager or currently in a unit manager post within the ICU department.
  • Incumbent must be ICU Trained.
  • Diploma in Nursing Administration is essential.
  • The ideal person will have willingness to assume job ownership, work independently and apply principles of continuous improvement.
  • Computer literacy – MS Word & Excel.

  • Excellent clinical knowledge of critical care nursing.
  • Sound knowledge of SANC, Department of Health (DOH), and relevant healthcare legislation.
  • Effective planning, organisational, and coordination skills.

  • Staff development, coaching, mentoring, and training skills.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Quality improvement and patient safety management.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and hospital information systems.
  • Report writing and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to ethical practice and continuous professional development.
