Barista/Café Assistant

About the Position

Flex n Fuel is looking for an experienced, professional and customer-focused Barista & Café Assistant to join our team.

This is a hands-on, multi-skilled position suited to someone who is passionate about coffee, food and excellent customer service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing high-quality coffees and beverages, assisting with the preparation of meals and food items, serving customers and supporting the general day-to-day operations of the café.

We are looking for someone who is energetic, reliable, well-presented and able to maintain high standards of quality, cleanliness and service in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities Coffee & Beverage Preparation

• Prepare and serve high-quality coffees, teas, smoothies and other beverages according to company standards.
• Prepare espresso-based beverages including cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, Americanos and speciality drinks.
• Operate a commercial espresso machine and coffee grinder correctly and confidently.
• Steam and texture milk to the correct standard.
• Maintain consistency in the taste, quality and presentation of all beverages.
• Keep the coffee station clean, organised and fully stocked.
• Clean and maintain coffee machines, grinders and other beverage equipment.

Food & Meal Preparation

• Assist with the preparation of meals and food items according to Flex n Fuel recipes, portions and presentation standards.
• Prepare ingredients and assist with basic cooking and food preparation.
• Assemble and plate meals neatly and professionally.
• Prepare takeaway and sit-down food orders accurately.
• Ensure food is prepared and served according to the required quality and presentation standards.
• Follow correct food handling, storage, hygiene and safety procedures.
• Maintain a clean, hygienic and organised food preparation area.
• Assist with receiving, storing and rotating food stock appropriately.

Customer Service & Serving

• Welcome customers in a friendly and professional manner.
• Take food and beverage orders accurately.
• Serve meals, coffees and other beverages to customers.
• Provide customers with information about menu items when required.
• Ensure customers receive prompt, friendly and professional service.
• Handle customer enquiries appropriately.
• Maintain a clean and presentable customer seating and service area.

Till & General Café Operations

• Operate the POS/till system.
• Assist with opening and closing duties.
• Monitor food, beverage and packaging stock levels.
• Assist with stock replenishment and stock control.
• Keep counters, equipment, preparation areas and service areas clean and organised.
• Assist other team members during busy periods.
• Perform general café duties as required to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of Flex n Fuel.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum 1–2 years' experience as a Barista or in a café/restaurant environment.
• Experience operating a commercial espresso machine and coffee grinder.
• Good knowledge of coffee preparation, espresso extraction and milk steaming/texturing.
• Previous experience with food preparation, meal preparation or kitchen duties would be advantageous.
• Comfortable handling and preparing food.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Understanding of basic food hygiene and safe food-handling practices.
• Ability to follow recipes, portion sizes and presentation standards accurately.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Professional appearance and excellent personal hygiene.
• Reliable, punctual and responsible.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Ability to remain calm and perform effectively under pressure.
• Basic numeracy and cash-handling skills.
• Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent preferred.

Advantageous Skills

• Latte art skills.
• Barista training or certification.
• Previous café, restaurant or kitchen experience.
• Experience preparing healthy meals, smoothies, protein shakes or similar food and beverage products.
• POS/till experience.
• Stock-control experience.
• Knowledge of food safety and hygiene procedures.

The ideal candidate will be friendly, energetic, hardworking and passionate about both coffee and food.

We are looking for someone who is willing to be hands-on and assist wherever required within the café. The successful candidate must take pride in cleanliness, presentation, customer service and consistently producing high-quality food and beverages.

Because this is a multi-skilled role, applicants must be comfortable moving between coffee preparation, food preparation, serving customers, till operation and general café duties throughout their shift.

Working Requirements

The successful candidate must be willing and available to work according to the operational requirements of the business, including weekends and public holidays when required.

Applicants must have reliable transport or a reliable means of travelling to and from the workplace for scheduled shifts.
