Franschhoek Wine Tram is a well-established hop-on hop-off tourism experience operating in the Franschhoek Valley. Guests travel through working vineyards via a double-deck railway tram and open-air tram-bus, visiting some of South Africa’s most distinguished wine estates.

Operating within a live tourism, transport, and hospitality environment requires a strong commitment to occupational health and safety, passenger security, operational compliance, and proactive risk management to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site position responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of all health, safety, and security functions within the organisation.

The Safety Officer will oversee compliance with Occupational Health & Safety legislation, manage physical security measures, and ensure safe operational practices across all departments. The role is responsible for safeguarding passengers, employees, contractors, company assets, and infrastructure, while fostering a strong culture of safety awareness and accountability.

Key responsibilities include:

• Implementing and maintaining Occupational Health & Safety systems and procedures
• Conducting regular risk assessments across transport operations, ticket offices, retail areas, and operational sites
• Identifying hazards and implementing corrective and preventative measures
• Monitoring compliance with safety legislation and company policies
• Investigating incidents, accidents, and near-misses, and compiling detailed reports with corrective action plans
• Overseeing site security protocols and access control measures
• Coordinating emergency preparedness plans and response procedures
• Conducting safety training and toolbox talks for staff
• Ensuring proper record keeping and safety documentation
• Liaising with management and regulatory authorities where required
• Promoting a proactive safety culture across all departments

Qualifications & Competencies

• Demonstrated experience in Occupational Health & Safety and compliance management
• Knowledge of security best practices and risk mitigation strategies
• Ability to conduct structured risk assessments and develop practical safety protocols
• Experience facilitating and conducting safety training
• Strong administrative and reporting capabilities
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• High attention to detail with a proactive and preventative mindset
• Experience within hospitality, tourism, transport, or public-facing environments is advantageous
• Relevant Health & Safety qualification preferred
• Diploma/Degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience

Requirements

• Full-time, on-site position in Franschhoek, Western Cape
• Reliable transport and valid driver’s licence (Code B)
• Ability to respond to safety and security incidents when required
• Willingness to relocate or reliably commute
